Wallpaper Guide

Decorating with Wallpapers

Colour Styles

Einfarbige Farbgestaltung mit Tapeten Plain style
Simple but interesting appears a colour design in which only one colour in different shades is used. Bright and dark contrasts break up the monotone colour effect and set varied accentuations.
Bunte Farbgestaltung mit Tapeten Colourful style
Impulsive, open, and high-contrast living ideas can be realised with colourful colour schemes. The harmonically co-ordinated colour variations appear exciting and vivid. There is no limit to your creativity and imagination.
Kontrastreiche Farbgestaltung mit Tapeten High-contrast style
Atmospheric room concepts can be realised by using two contrasty colours. Wallpaper designs with dark basic colours and bright pattern colours normally appear more festive than wallpapers with bright basic colours and dark pattern colours which have a more modern character.

Ambience – Changing Rooms with Wallpapers

How a room appears and which feeling it provokes depends on its design. Wallpapers influence the sensation of the room with their colours and patterns significantly. They cannot only change room proportions but also provoke a special atmosphere.

Mit Streifen Räume höher wirken lassen Making rooms look higher
A room with a low ceiling is likely to provoke an overwhelming feeling. By using the proper wallpapers it does not only appear higher but also friendlier. For this purpose the most suitable wallpapers are vertically pasted stripe wallpapers which stretch the room visually. This optic effect can be supported by a bright or white ceiling. A room appears higher if its floor and walls are darker than the ceiling.
Mit großen Mustern einen Raum schmaler wirken lassen Making high rooms look lower
Rooms with a dark ceiling appear lower and more comfortable. Another option to make a room look lower is a combination of two different wallpapers which are horizontally interrupted by a border.
Mit Querstreifen einen Raum breiter wirken lassen Making rooms look wider
Small patterns in bright colours make walls look bigger whereas big motifs in dark colour shades make walls appear smaller. To make a room look wider a combination of both options is advisable. Thus three walls should be wallpapered with bright small patterns while the fourth wall should be decorated with a dark pattern.
Räume niedriger wirken lassen Making rooms look narrower
A room appears narrower if it is wallpapered with vertical stripes. Horizontal stripes make the room look wider. But not only stripes can change the proportions of a wall visually. Wallpapers with big motifs in dark colours can make a room look smaller.
Wallpaper Types

Wallpaper materials are as different as wallpaper designs. Each quality is characterised by individual properties.

Flocktapete - 70-228

Flock Wallpapers

Flock wallpapers are characterised by a special surface made of short cut viscose fibres. Thereby the wallpapers receive a soft finish. The high-low pattern structure stands out from the background and creates a special plasticity.

Relieftapete - 412109

Relief Wallpapers

Relief wallpapers consist of a paper layer which gets its three-dimensional structure by a special imprinting process. By this distinct structure, 3D effects are created and intensified by a specific colour selection.

Satintapete - 6830-14

Satin Wallpapers

The satin wallpapers distinguish themselves from other wallpaper types especially by their shiny effects. These effects are created by a special production method. Satin wallpapers are hard-wearing and scrubbable due to their special surface characteristics.

Schaumtapete - 766707

Foam Wallpapers

The upper material of foam wallpapers consists of an easily visible and palpable structure which causes special optical effects. This structure is created by a soft foam material which is incorporated in the wallpapers surface.

Tapetenbordüre - 73162

Wallpaper Borders

Wallpaper borders are printed wallpaper rolls, which can be applied horizontally or vertically on already fixed strips of wallpaper as a decoration element. Usually borders have a length of about 5m / 5.47yd and a width of about 10 - 30 cm / 3.94 – 11.81 ‘’.

Textiltapete

Textile Wallpapers

Wallpapers with processed yarns and fabrics on their surface are called textile wallpapers. By the processing of textiles these wallpapers receive their particular high-quality look. During the manufacturing process, small yarns, felt, bass, synthetic and natural fibres as well as feathers can be applied onto the upper material.

Überstreichbare Tapete - 953442

Paintable Wallpapers

Paintable wallpapers are wallpapers which can be painted over with dispersion, latex or acrylic paint after wallpapering.

Vinyltapete - 854107

Vinyl Wallpapers

Vinyl wallpapers are extraordinarily hard-wearing, scrubbable and divisible due to their backing material. They are particularly suited for the use in utility rooms and for strained walls.

Vliestapete - 8550-39

Non-Woven Wallpapers

Non-woven wallpapers can be directly processed without soaking time. The material is dimensionally stable and can bridge or conceal minor flaws in the wall. As far as the wall has been pre-treated, non-woven wallpapers can be removed dry-strippable.

Papiertapete - 237801

Paper Wallpapers

Paper wallpapers consist of two different layers of paper. Because of their simple material-properties, paper wallpapers are reasonable in price and environmental-friendly. If you want to process paper wallpapers please note that a soaking time of 5-10 min. is required. Thus it is not advisable to paste the wall directly if you use paper wallpapers.

Prägetapete - 226744

Embossed Wallpapers

Embossed wallpapers have a specific structure created by lamination and embossing of different layers with a wallpaper roller. These wallpapers are referred to as ‘duplex’.

Wallpaper Symbols & Wallpaper Signs

Design Match

The design match indicates how many cm/inches the pattern of the next strip of wallpaper has to be moved to ensure the consecutiveness of the pattern on the wall.

Tapetensymbol: Ansatzfrei Free Match:
Wallpapers which are marked by the symbol ‘free match’ can be cut continuously to the required length. Thus it is required to pay attention to the wallpaper patterns during the sticking process.
Tapetensymbol: Gerader Ansatz Straight Match:
The wallpaper symbol ‘straight match’ means that every strip of wallpaper is identic in its pattern height. Thus the wallpapers can be stacked for the cutting process if the patterns are overlapping.
Tapetensymbol: Versetzter Ansatz Offset Match:
To ensure the consecutiveness of the patterns, wallpapers with ‘offset match’ have to be moved by a half of the pattern height. The design match indicates how many cm/inches the pattern has to be moved.

Processing Symbols

These wallpaper symbols provide directions on how to process wallpapers properly. To achieve an optimal wallpapering result it is advisable to follow these directions.

Production Number:
The production number is located on the package insert of any wallpaper roll. This number indicates the wallpaper’s production line. Connected surfaced should always be processed with wallpapers of the same production number to prevent minor colour deviations.

Tapetensymbol: Bahn einkleistern Wallpaper Pasting:
On wallpapers with this symbol the paste has to be applied directly onto the back of the wallpaper. Afterwards the paste has to soak for about 5-10 minutes. During the process of soaking the paste enters the wallpaper’s fibres and makes them swell. If the prescribed soaking time is observed blistering and wrinkling can be prevented.
Tapetensymbol: Gestürzt kleben Reverse Alternate Length:
By processing wallpapers with this symbol every second strip of wallpaper has to be applied reversed to prevent colour differences. By this procedure possible colour differences between the wallpaper edges are compensated.
Tapetensymbol: Wand einkleistern Wall Pasting:
The paste can be applied directly to the wall and the strip of wallpaper can be attached. Due to special material properties this symbol is located only on non-woven wallpapers.

Wallpaper Symbols for Renovation

Before applying the new wallpaper to your walls, the old wallpaper has to be removed. The wallpaper symbols for renovation indicate how a wallpaper can be removed the best way.

Tapetensymbol: Restlos trocken abziehbar Dry-Strippable:
Wallpapers with this symbol can be removed dry-strippable from the wall, as long as the walls have been pre-treated properly before.
Tapetensymbol: Nass zu entfernen Wet Removing:
Wallpapers with this symbol have to be moistened before being removed. After a short soaking time the wallpaper can be removed from the wall with a scraper.
Tapetensymbol: Spaltbar Divisible:
If a wallpaper is divisible the upper material can be removed from the support material. In this case the paper or the non-woven support material is left on the wall. As long as the support material is absorbent and undamaged it can be used as base for the new wallpapers.
Tapetensymbol: Dupliert Duplex:
Duplex wallpapers have a high-quality embossed structure which consists of a stable double embossing. By this special finish the embossing is maintained even under rough conditions.

Properties

Wallpapers are characterised according to their wash and light resistance. The symbols indicated how soilings on the wallpaper can be eliminated and how colourfast the wallpaper is.

Tapetensymbol: Ausreichend lichtbeständig Satisfying Lightfastness:
The wallpaper has an adequate colourfastness against light. Long exposure to direct solar radiation can cause the wallpaper to slowly turn yellow or to slightly change in colour.
Tapetensymbol: Gut lichtbeständig Good Lightfastness:
The wallpaper is well protected against solar radiation.
Tapetensymbol: Hoch waschbeständig Highly Washable:
Highly washable wallpapers can be cleaned carefully from dirt and water-soluble stains with soapy water and a wet cleaning rag.
Tapetensymbol: Scheuerbeständig Scrubbable:
If a wallpaper is scrubbable, soilings can be eliminated from the upper material with a mild soap solution and a soft brush. Still it is not advisable to rub the wallpaper heavily because thereby the upper material can be damaged.
Tapetensymbol: Waschbeständig Washable:
Light soilings can be cleaned carefully with a wet cleaning rag or sponge.
Tapetensymbol: Wasserbeständig Water Resistant:
Paste residues on the wallpaper can be dabbed carefully with a wet cleaning rag or sponge.

Quality Marks and Certifications

Wallpapers can be tested according to different requirements. The quality marks and certifications are indicators for the quality standards of each wallpaper.

CE-Zeichen CE Label:
The CE label corresponds to the guidelines of EU law and marks safety-tested products. Wallpapers with CE label are accredited according to the EN norm 15102 and fulfil certain requirements of fire protection as well as of the emission of dangerous substances e.g. of heavy metals.
RAL-Zeichen RAL Label
The RAL quality label signalises a proved wallpaper quality and guarantees that no health or ecological hazards are coming from the wallpapers.

FSC Label:
The FSC label is awarded by a charitable organisation named Forest Stewardship Council®. The FSC certification indicates that the paper of the wallpapers is extracted from wood of responsible forestry.

Preparing – Wallpapering Made Easy

Remove Old Wallpapers

Before a room can be decorated with new wallpapers the old wallpapers have to be removed.

Tapeten mit diesem Symbol können nass entfernt werden Remove Moistened Wallpapers:
Moistened wallpapers can be removed easily. After applying water a soaking time is advised to enable the moisture to reach the wallpaper paste so that the paste can dissolve. The water should be applied areal on the wall with a broad brush, a wide brush or a water syringe. Thick wallpapers can be perforated with a needle roll allowing the moisture to soak in faster. Alternatively a special wallpaper stripper can be used to remove the wallpaper. After a short soaking time the moistened wallpaper can be removed easily from the wall with a scraper.
Tapeten mit diesem Symbol sind trocken abziehbar

Remove Wallpapers Dry-Strippable:
Non-woven wallpapers can be removed dry-strippable from a pre-treated wall. It is recommended to remove the wallpapers by peeling them off with even pull.

Tapeten mit diesem Symbol sind spaltbar Remove Divisible Wallpapers:
Wallpapers with divisible upper material can be removed dry from the wall. If the support material is undamaged and sticks to the wall it can be used as a base for the new wallpaper.

Determination of Roll Requirement

Tapeten aus der Kollektion Esprit Home 11

How many wallpapers rolls are needed can be read from the following chart. A wallpaper roll with the standard size of about 10.05 m x 0.53 m / 11yd x 21 ‘’ (euro-roll) is sufficient for about 5 m² of the wall or ceiling area. The roll requirement depends on the height of the ceiling and the design match. If the design match is wide, it is recommended to budget more wallpaper rolls.

  • Wallpapers with free match can be cut to the desired length without waste directly from the roll.
  • Wallpapers with straight match have an identic pattern height so that the patterns can be overlapped during the cutting process.
  • Wallpapers with offset match have to be displaced for about the half of the pattern height in order to guarantee the consecutiveness of the pattern. Here every second strip of wallpaper is identic.

How to Prepare the Wall before Wallpapering

The correct pre-treating of the wall is an important criterion to achieve an optimal wallpapering result. Often an improper substrate preparation is the cause of blistering and bad sticking on the wall. For the different substrata the following checks and preparations can be made:

Concrete surfaces:

  • Test absorbency by wetting the wall with water
  • Remove sintered layer by roughen the wall before
  • Prime the wall with pigmented wallpaper primer coat
  • An insufficient absorbency on the wall can be compensated by a lining wallpaper or a renovation non-woven wallpaper

Plasterboard:

  • By using non-woven wallpapers the plasterboard needs to be primed by a pigmented wallpaper primer so that white filler seams do not become visible through the wallpaper
  • By using wallpapers a priming coat with a water-thinnable wallpapering primer is needed

Gypsum plaster:

  • Test absorbency by wetting the wall with water
  • Remove sintered layer by roughen the wall before
  • Paste the wall with matching wallpaper paste

Wood substrates:

  • To prevent a yellow-brown discoloration of the wallpaper the highly absorbent wood substrate should be pre-treated with an insulating paint

New plaster/Lime-cement plaster:

  • Test absorbency by wetting the wall with water
  • Remove sintered layer by roughen the wall before
  • Prime the wall with a pigmented wallpaper primer

Polystyrene lining wallpaper:

  • For an optimal wallpaper adhesion it is advisable to use diluted polystyrene glue
  • An insufficient absorbency on the wall can be compensated by a lining wallpaper a renovation non-woven wallpaper

Which Wallpaper Type is Suitable for which Room?

In living rooms any wallpaper type can be used. In utility rooms it is advised to use high washable or scrubbable wallpapers. Often this properties are offered by vinyl wallpapers. To protect wallpapers and non-woven wallpapers from spray water it is advisable to refine them with so-called elephant skin. Elephant skin is a liquid and colourless substance which is washable and conditionally scrubbable. A surface coated with elephant skin appears either silk-matt or slightly shiny depending on the wallpaper type. The shiny effect increases by overpainting it several times.

Processing – Wallpapering Made Easy

Paste

To get the perfect adhesion on the wall it is important to have the suitable wallpaper paste. What should be taken notice of and which type of wallpaper paste is the appropriate to use will be explained below.

Paper backing:
Normal or special paste is used for the processing of wallpapers. These wallpaper pastes do not contain dispersive elements and prevents strong staining on the wall. Due to its good processing properties the special wallpaper paste is particularly suitable for paper wallpapers.

Renovation non-woven wallpaper:
For the renovation non-woven wallpaper a paste for new plaster, containing particularly strong adhesive additives is recommended. The new plaster paste offers excellent processing properties because it is easy to apply and highly moisture resistant. Thus this type of wallpaper paste is particularly suitable for new plaster. Alternatively pure dispersion adhesive can be used if the renovation non-woven wallpaper is used as a base for other wallpapers.

Vinyl and relief wallpapers:
When processing this type of wallpapers it is advisable to use a special wallpaper paste mixed with 20-30% of dispersion adhesive. By adding dispersion adhesive the wallpaper backing of divisible wallpapers adheres firmer to the surface. In case of renovation the upper material can be removed from the base without damaging it. In this way the layer on the wall can be used as a base for the new wallpaper.

Non-woven backing:
For the processing of non-woven wallpapers a special non-woven wallpaper paste is required. The non-woven wallpaper paste has the advantage that it can be applied directly on the wall. It does not spill much and does not dry fast, thus the paste is perfectly suitable for the wall-pasting technique.

Wallpaper Pasting vs. Wall pasting

Die Bahnklebetechnik Wallpaper pasting technique
With the wallpaper pasting technique the strip of wallpaper is pasted and after a soaking time of approx. 5-10 minutes it is processed on the wall. This concerns wallpapers with paper backing. First the wallpaper has to be cut on a pasting table to the desired length – then it has to be pasted from the centre with a wide brush or a paste roll. To transport the pasted strip of wallpaper without interrupting the soaking process it has to be folded 2/3 from above and 1/3 from below to the centre. To save space the folded strip of wallpaper can be rolled up additionally. The soaking time should be respected so that the wallpapering result does not suffer from blistering.
Die Wandklebetechnik Wall pasting
This wall pasting technique is recommended when using non-woven wallpapers. With this method not the wallpaper but the wall is pasted. The best way of doing so is to use a paste roll to space out the wallpaper paste evenly on the wall. As soon as the paste is applied the wallpaper can be placed on the wall without soaking time. This procedure saves time and prevents undesirable paste stains on the upper material. Wallpapers with free match can be processed without being cut before because the strip of wallpaper can be cut directly from the wallpaper roll to the desired length at the end of the wallpapering process. Thus no pasting table is needed.

Steps to Wallpapering Success

1. Measuring and cutting:
Measure the wall height with a measuring tape or folding ruler and add approx. 5-10 cm / 1.97-3.94 ‘‘. Unfold the wallpaper on the pasting table and cut it with a knife or with scissors to the desired length. While cutting pay attention to the design match of the wallpaper. For a smooth wallpapering process it is advisable to prepare enough strips of wallpaper.

2. Close doors and windows:
Before applying the wallpaper to the wall make sure that there is an optimal room climate of approx. 15-20°C. Keep windows and doors closed so that no draught is created and the wallpapers do not dry unevenly.

3. The first strip of wallpaper is decisive:
For a straight and flat result the first strip of wallpaper has to be in the right position because the following strips border the first. To adjust the first strip it is advisable to use a spirit level or a plummet to draw a straight line with a pencil on the wall. Begin the wallpapering process at a window and make sure that there is enough light in the room.

4. Adhere strips of wallpaper end-to-end:
Process the wallpapers end-to-end. This means that the edges of the strips of wallpaper border on each other. The seam can be additionally pressed on with a seam roll so that a clean transition is guaranteed. Make sure that the seams of embossed wallpapers are processed with a piece of cloth and not with a roll. Otherwise the embossed structure could be damaged.

5. Reworking:
If there are paste stains or residues left on the upper material of the wallpaper, they have to be removed as fast as possible. Otherwise undesirable shiny effects or discolorations may occur. It is advisable to use a wet cleaning rag or sponge to remove the residues by dabbing.

Post-Processing – Wallpapering made Easy

Damages and small flaws which occur during the process of wallpapering cannot always be avoided. Nonetheless they can be corrected and remedied with some useful tips and tricks.

Blistering
A frequent cause for blistering of the wallpaper is a too short or too long soaking time. Therefore it is important to pay attention to the correct soaking time and to let all strips of wallpaper soak equally long. Another cause for blistering is that an insufficient amount of wallpaper paste is used and the wallpaper comes loose from the wall. In this case it is possible to inject wallpaper paste subsequently with a paste syringe. Afterwards the wallpaper can be pressed on with a soft wallpapering brush or a sponge rubber roll.

Wrinkling
If the soaking time was not observed correctly wrinkles can appear during the wallpapering process because the wallpapers contract or expand while drying. If wrinkles appear during the wallpapering they can be straightened carefully with a wallpaper brush or a sponge rubber roll.

Staining
If paste drops accidently on the upper material during the wallpapering it can be removed carefully with a cleaning rag or sponge. If brown stains stand out under the wallpaper this can be an indication of metal parts inside the wall like nails or metal beams. To prevent this, remove old nails or screws completely from the wall before wallpapering.

Open seams
To prevent open seams it is important to observe the recommended soaking time of the wallpaper. Furthermore make sure that the wallpaper has to be processed end-to-end so that there is no gap between two strips of wallpaper. If the seams come loose from the wall or open while drying, paste can be applied carefully on the affected areas with a small brush. Afterwards the wallpaper should be straightened carefully with a wallpaper brush or a sponge rubber roll.
